Description
SS-31 25mg from Polaris Peptides is 25mg of SS-31 in a sealed glass vial. SS-31 is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide. It’s for in-vitro and lab research only.
About SS-31 (elamipretide)
SS-31, also called elamipretide, is a four-amino-acid peptide: D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2. It alternates positive charges with aromatic rings, a design that lets it slip through cell membranes and collect in mitochondria.
Once there, it binds cardiolipin, a fat that’s found almost only in the inner mitochondrial membrane and that holds the energy-making machinery in place.
How SS-31 acts in the lab
Cardiolipin holds together the protein complexes that make ATP in mitochondria. When it’s oxidized, those complexes work less well and leak more free radicals.
SS-31 binds cardiolipin and protects it, which in lab studies kept the electron transport chain working more efficiently and cut oxidative damage. It doesn’t depend on the membrane voltage to get into mitochondria, which sets it apart from other targeted antioxidants.

Published SS-31 studies
Hazel Szeto and Peter Schiller designed it in the early 2000s; SS stands for Szeto-Schiller. Stealth BioTherapeutics took it into clinical trials for mitochondrial diseases, including primary mitochondrial myopathy and Barth syndrome.
It’s one of the few mitochondria-targeted peptides with real human trial data. This vial is research material, not the clinical product.

SS-31 compared with similar compounds
Here’s how SS-31 25mg fits among related compounds. SS-31 targets cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane. By comparison:
- Epithalon is the tetrapeptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, studied for telomerase activity
- NAD+ is the coenzyme behind cell energy and sirtuin activity, whose levels fall with age
- Glutathione is the cell’s main antioxidant tripeptide
- FOXO4-DRI is a D-retro-inverso peptide that disrupts FOXO4 and p53 in senescent cells
Aging research splits into a few processes, and each of these compounds targets one: telomeres, cell energy, mitochondria, oxidative stress or senescent cells. See them all on our anti-aging peptides page.
Lab-tested SS-31 25mg
Every batch of SS-31 25mg is checked by HPLC-MS. HPLC separates the sample and measures how much of it is the target compound, and mass spectrometry confirms the molecular weight, so one test covers both purity and identity. SS-31 25mg tests at over 99% purity.
After freeze-drying, each vial is vacuum-sealed. Keeping air and moisture out is what lets lyophilized peptide stay stable for months in a freezer.
Keep a record of the batch number on each label. Matching results to batches is the simplest way to rule out the material when an experiment doesn’t behave.
Reconstituting SS-31 25mg
Here’s the math for 25mg of powder:
- 2mL of bacteriostatic water gives 12.5mg/mL
- 3mL of bacteriostatic water gives 8.33mg/mL
- 5mL of bacteriostatic water gives 5mg/mL
Choose the volume that suits your measurements. Mark the vial with the concentration and date so nobody has to guess later.
Most labs use sterile bacteriostatic water, which has 0.9% benzyl alcohol to keep the vial clean between draws. Warm the sealed vial to room temperature, add the water slowly along the glass wall and swirl gently until it’s clear. Never shake it.
How to store SS-31 25mg
Freeze-dried SS-31 25mg handles room temperature fine during shipping, but for anything longer keep it in a freezer at -20°C, away from light. Once mixed, keep it in the fridge at 2 to 8°C and use it within 28 days.
If you keep several vials going at once, store them upright in a closed box so they stay out of the light and don’t get knocked over every time the fridge opens.
