What are GLP-1 peptides?

GLP-1 is a gut hormone released after meals. It drives glucose-dependent insulin release, slows stomach emptying and acts on appetite centers in the brain. The natural hormone lasts about two minutes, so research compounds are modified to last days instead.

The range steps up in receptor targets. Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 receptor only. Tirzepatide adds the GIP receptor, and retatrutide adds the glucagon receptor on top of both. Survodutide and mazdutide pair GLP-1 with glucagon, and cagrilintide works through a different hormone, amylin.
